Winterbourne Hall is not safe.

Even as Clare and Dorran scramble to secure the ancient building against ravenous hollow ones, they face something far worse: Clare’s sister has made contact, but she’s trapped, and her oxygen is running out.

Hundreds of miles separate Clare from Beth. The land between them is infested with monsters, and the roads are a maze of dead ends. Clare has to choose between making a journey she knows she might not survive, or staying safe in Winterbourne and listening as her sister slowly suffocates.

At least, whatever her choice, she’ll have Dorran by her side. And yet there are eyes in the dark. There are whispers in the mist.

There is danger lurking in the snow, and one false step could end it all….

Q&A

Where does the story pick up from since the first book?

Book One ends with our characters, Clare and Dorran, trying to figure out a survival plan in the new world. While their remote snowbound home protects them from the worst of the monsters roaming the outside world, it also cuts them off from any other remaining humans. But that has to change when Clare finally makes contact with her lost sister, Beth, and hears how close she is to losing her forever.

What was the inspiration behind the Black Winter series?

I had an image in my mind of driving down a rural road during a snowstorm and seeing a car abandoned off the side of the road, its doors open and its occupants missing.

That became the opening scene for the series, and everything that followed has been expanding on it! Many of my books are gothic fiction, and I had a lot of fun blending that atmosphere with a more modern apocalyptic storyline.

Were you influenced by any works of art – music, film, TV or books – while writing Secrets in the Dark?

Definitely. 28 Days Later, World War Z, and a few gothic romances by Susan Howatch were at the back of my mind while writing. The pandemic began while I was editing the final Black Winter book and, well, it hit a bit too close to home!

When is the best time to write?

Daytime is best for clear thought and planning. Night is best when I want to be carried away by a story. A lot of my writing happens at night, but I’m trying to tone it back–my bedtime has been shifting later and later, and if I don’t reverse it soon, I’ll end up awake until dawn and sleeping through the day.

    What are you currently reading?

I’ve not long finished Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s Mexican Gothic–a gorgeous, intense book, and exactly my kind of story! I picked up a copy of T. Kingfisher’s The Twisted Ones today, and can’t wait to make a start.
