Rosie Harris is left an orphan and is raised by the gypsies. Maria takes her in as the daughter she never had. Going home to Wednesbury for the Gathering – the meeting of the kumpanias (gypsy clans) to choose life partners, Rosie once again loses the mother figure when Maria dies.
Jake Harding, the Romany bandolier, pursues Rosie in the hope of marriage, but she rejects him. Her heart lies with another.
Befriended by a family of cut-rats – people of the canals – Rosie fall for Bill Mitchell. However, the man she has set her sights on is married to another.
Bill has twin sons who desperately want to work the canals like their grandparents, but their mother has other ideas for them.
Rosie makes a living by reading palms having discovered she has second sight, but this seems to land her in trouble time after time. She foresees the coming of disease and is blamed for bring it to the town she finally settles in.
Her friend Lucy, an artist who lived on the streets, falls for the gypsy bandolier Jake, and becomes pregnant by him. She has a daughter but still has dreams of owning her own art gallery. John, one of the twins, marries Lucy who he adores, but it is not a happy union. Unable to shirk her dreams, Lucy leaves her daughter with Rosie to raise.
Eventually Rosie convinces Jake to take on the responsibility of raising his daughter.
In time Bill Mitchell divorces his wife but is not sure Rosie feels the same for him as he does for her.
Frank, the other twin, falls for a boy, called Tad, of his own age. This union is against the law and so must be kept secret. Although he works the canals, Tad never learned to swim and is drowned when knocked off the boat the two boys work together.
Rosie has foreseen this but cannot find it in her to reveal it to Frank.
Naturally things all come together as I love a happy ending to my books. I try to incorporate laughter, tears, heart-break, happiness and joy in my stories. I strive to take readers to places they might never have been by using descriptions of the places I set my tales in. I also endeavour to incorporate historical facts to further enhance the storyline.
I gather ideas from people I meet, places I visit and research I carry out – like the day I visited the workhouse – a chilling experience but worth it!
I understand the Black Country dialect is difficult to understand but I feel it’s essential in places; it is not bad grammar – it’s just the way we talk.
To anyone who has read my books and enjoyed them – I thank you. A big ta very much to those who took the time to review my work. It would appear I now have a loyal following and I can’t tell you how much that means to me. I feel very honoured.
